Rustic Sophistication

Perched on the highest point of Old San Juan and overlooking the infinity of the Atlantic horizon, you will find The Gallery Inn, tucked into an intimate nook to the side of San Justo Street’s north end.

The intriguing facade and inspiring front gardens are just a quick preview of what you will encounter in our place. You will soon find out that despite its cozy initial appearance, our Inn is actually a sprawling 23,000-square-foot authentic colonial mansion. The Inn’s mesmerizing labyrinthic feel is combined with intriguing decor and ambience, a product of decades of delicate tending by artist and resident owner Jan D’Esopo. Stone floors, imposing arches, and original ausubo beams are complimented by hanging foliage, exotic birds, and the trickle of sculpted fountains. The walls of corridors and rooms are lined with books and pieces of art.

You will be free to wander and explore our Inn. Be sure to visit our Venetian-style Music Room. You just might encounter an impromptu chamber music concert, but if not you are free to sit at our grand piano and play a tune or two while you gaze out at the sea. Continue up our staircases and you will reach our wooden Top Deck, which commands breath-taking views of the Old City and surrounding areas, including San Juan Bay and the island’s central hills. Save some time to sit in our Orchid Garden, a great place to read, converse, or just ponder. Top it off with an invigorating swim in our pool, which is surrounded by sculptures and plant life. And remember to always be relaxed, as there is much to take in and appreciate.

The Gallery Inn is a mystery in itself. Among hotels it is truly unique. We would never want to see our place turn into the bland, cookie-cutter sort. We must warn you! Our Inn is over 300 years old, and we feel that the essence of authenticity and beauty is of utmost importance and value to our concept. We do not have any elevators, and never will. If you cannot take staircases, this might not be the hotel for you. Our exotic birds are absolutely precious to look at, but they will occasionally screech. If you feel this would bother you significantly, we might not be your best choice. Also, we are not secluded from the local population, so if you are the kind of traveler who wants to feel “protected” from the locals, you should not come. Basically, our Inn is for adventurous travelers who want something different, not the high-maintenance type. If you feel you don’t have the mettle to tolerate any minor inconvenience you might run into, then you probably shouldn’t come. We want everyone who decides to stay with us to have a great time and enjoy themselves, and we work very hard towards that goal. That is why we want to let you know who we are. If this appeals to you, be most welcome! We would love to receive your visit.
